The Houston Texans had an excellent season in 2018. The team won more games than the vast majority of fans expected. However, the season ended on a disappointing note. The Texans lost to the Colts in the first round of the playoffs. Despite all of the talent on the roster, the Texans have not won a playoff game in years.
During the offseason, the team needs to address various issues on the roster. Although Deshaun Watson is an excellent quarterback, the team needs to improve the offensive line. Watson has had health problems in the past. If he continues to get sacked multiple times each game, it is likely that he will get injured again.
The defense is the strength of the team. Led by a talented defensive line, the Texans were able to limit most opposing offenses. The secondary needs a few upgrades going into the 2019 season. There were times when the cornerbacks gave up touchdowns in important games. For example, Andrew Luck was able to throw for over 300 yards against the Texans.
Many NFL analysts believe the Texans will target a cornerback in the first round. If the team can draft a quality player for the secondary, the defense could be much better in 2019.
The Texans use multiple running backs throughout the season. Although no single running back is elite, the group produces at a high level. One issue with this group is that most of the running backs are starting to age. The team may select a running back later in the draft to improve depth at the position.
The Texans have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL. However, the team continuously struggled to win games at crucial times. The entire organization needs to assess why the team has not had success in the playoffs. The good news is that the organization has a lot of salary cap space to utilize for the upcoming seasons.
