Electric services provider Stream Energy, based in Dallas, Texas, supports communities and local charities through its philanthropic program called Stream Cares. Stream Energy was established in 2005, and Stream Cares is now in its third year. The philanthropic program has partnered with numerous organizations to raise funds and provide support for those who need it most. It’s through giving back and word of mouth that Stream Energy has created such a large network of support in Dallas and throughout the country.
Some of the many organizations that Stream Energy’s Stream Care program has supported include Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross Services to the Armed Forces Giving Program, Cell Phones for Soldiers, Girls Inc., Operation Once in a Lifetime, Texas Tornado Benefit, and Hope Supply Co.
Stream Cares was launched at Ignition 2016, a company-wide convention that is held annually. At its launch, this innovative energy company’s Independent Associates and employees worked together to raise thousands of dollars through the sale of t-shirts and direct donations.
Since its inception, the philanthropic program has continued to raise money for charity throughout the year and at its annual convention. Through Stream Cares, the retail electricity provider has been there not only for its own customers and Associates but also for many others impacted by devastating tragedies.
Offering Much-Needed Relief After Harvey
Through its Stream Cares program, Stream Energy donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross following Hurricane Harvey in September of 2017. Harvey devastated much of the Texas coastal region, displacing thousands of people, many of whom were Stream Energy Independent Associates and customers.
“We established Stream Cares to help people who experience homelessness in all its forms. That includes natural disasters,” said President and CEO Larry Mondry. “We are absolutely committed to supporting the American Red Cross as they bring relief to those affected by this historic storm, including the thousands of Stream customers in the area.”
The storm included torrential flooding that devastated the area and forced nearly 30,000 people out of their homes. It also caused over 300,000 power outages.
In addition to its generous donation to the American Red Cross, Stream Energy also waived late fees for its 127,000 customers in the areas affected by Hurricane Harvey and told them not to worry about the due dates on their invoices. Its wireless services division, Stream Wireless, also credited back any late fees to wireless customer accounts during this time. The company sent this message out to its customers: “If you’re unable to make a payment on time, we understand. There will be no disconnections and no extra money owed. Just time to heal and focus on what matters.”
On top of the donations through Stream Cares, the organization’s Associate community created a crowdfunding campaign to provide much-needed aid to its fellow Independent Associates located in the areas hit by Harvey. Stream Energy pledged to match these donations up to $25,000.
In addition to helping people affected by Harvey recover from the initial devastation of the storm, Stream Cares helped families get their lives back in order. For example, Stream Cares provided support to the coastal community of Port Arthur, Texas, by giving away free furniture. It provided this furniture at the BCL of Texas Port Arthur Family Matters event.
The furniture came from Las Vegas, Nevada, hotels that no longer needed it. All in all, there were seven truckloads of furnishing donated that included couches, dining room tables, dressers, lamps, desks, living room chairs, mirrors, and more. Stream Cares helped over 100 families refurnish their homes in and around Port Arthur. While much of the attention and focus after Harvey was on Houston, those in the Golden Triangle area, which includes Port Arthur and Beaumont, suffered significant home damage from Hurricane Harvey.
In addition to the more than 900 pieces of furniture that Stream Cares brought it, the organization also provided meals for all of its volunteers who unloaded the furniture for the families. Stream Energy’s philanthropic program Stream Cares partnered with The City of Port Arthur, Port Arthur Independent Schools, St. Joseph Catholic Church, NeighborWorks America, Operation Blessings, Nechama Jewish Response to Disaster, and IF Staffing and Construction to make this event happen.
Hurricane Harvey was not the first disaster for which Stream Energy assisted in relief efforts. The retail energy provider also made donations to the Utility Emergency Services Fund (UESF) in Philadelphia and the Red Cross to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy back in 2012.
Stream Cares and Hope Supply Co.
Based in Dallas, Hope Supply Co. (formerly Captain Hope’s Kids) is a non-profit organization devoted to helping homeless children in North Texas. Homelessness in Dallas, as well as other parts of the country, is a real issue for which Stream Energy and its philanthropic program Stream Cares is dedicated to providing relief.
According to an Annual Homeless Assessment Report that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) created, the number of people in families that are homeless has increased by almost 20 percent. HUD also estimates that over 35 percent of homeless people on any given night are families, rather than individuals.
Reaching these families in Dallas, as well as throughout Texas, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Illinois, and Washington D.C., where Stream provides retail electricity services, is vital. And Stream Energy has been dedicated for many years to helping homeless families through organizations such as Hope Supply Co.
Every year, Stream Energy hosts an event with Hope Supply Co. called Splash for Hope. The retail electricity provider sponsors hundreds of homeless children for a day full of fun and surprises at the Hawaiian Falls Water Park. For many of these children, it is their first time ever visiting a water park. Each child is provided with a pair of flip flops, a fun hat, and a nice picnic lunch.
“It is so rewarding to see the smiles on the children’s faces as they explore Hawaiian Falls for what might be their first time at a waterpark,” says Hope Supply Co. Vice President of Mission Brenda Cannon. “The day is filled with fun for everyone, and it wouldn’t be possible without generous sponsors like Stream.”
Stream Energy has been committed to helping Hope Supply Co. meet the critical needs of homeless children for many years.
The retail electricity services provider launched a webpage back in 2012 for its supporters, Independent Associates, and customers to make direct donations to Hope Supply Co. It was part of the company’s campaign called “A Big Difference Starts Small.”
Stream has always been proud to help bring attention to causes like Hope Supply Co., which has touched the lives of so many homeless families and children. Executives shared that 47 percent of the homeless population in the Dallas metropolitan area, where the company’s corporate headquarters are located, are families with children.
In addition to its annual fundraiser at the Hawaiian Falls Water Park and online donations to this worthwhile cause, Stream Energy has also been involved in numerous other events with Hope Supply Co. The retail energy provider has also drawn attention to Hope Supply Co. on numerous occasions through its sponsorship of the Big D NYE Fireworks Spectacular in downtown Dallas. Stream Energy has hosted this event on New Year’s Eve for many years. It attracts more than 35,000 attendees and is broadcasted to more than six and a half million people in five different states. Stream Energy has used this platform to bring attention to Hope Supply Co. and encourage others to support this worthwhile cause dedicated to serving homeless children in North Texas.
Another way that Stream Energy has demonstrated its ongoing support for Hope Supply Co. is by collecting diapers for its annual Diaper Drive. The retail electricity provider has created publicity and exposure for the cause online and through its various events.
Stream Energy has also publicized events such as this one internally to its Associates encouraging them to participate by either donating diapers and training pants or making a financial contribution. Stream has even held its own employee-sponsored diaper drive for the organization. And in 2011, the retail energy provider set a record for diaper donations.
The budget for non-profits such as Hope Supply Co. is very tight. These types of organizations need the support of businesses and citizens in the community to achieve success for their missions. Stream Energy is pleased to support such worthwhile causes. With Stream’s support, Hope Supply Co. was able to provide 8,600 diapers per week to homeless infants and toddlers served by nearly 40 local agencies in the Dallas area after the diaper drive one year.
Through Stream Cares, Stream Energy and its employees and Independent Associates will continue to support Hope Supply Co. in its efforts to assist homeless children and families in the Dallas area.
